Just had a refurbished j-type overdrive fitted. Was fitted by a well know Stag specialist. It has a harsh disengagement. Have been told it’s normal and to let it bed in.
Is this correct?
Peter.
I find it hard to believe they were like that on a new car before they "Bedded in"! It may help to have your foot on the accelerator a bit when switching it out. Try to compare it with another car with a J type if you can.
Mike.
I installed a new cone clutch on mine and yes it did take a while to settle down, but it’s still a bit harsher disengaging than engaging, I think that’s normal. You can indeed help things with the throttle.

Hi Terry,
the disengagement is very harsh whereas engagement is fine. My old drive was the original so lovely and smooth and bone dry. The clutch has gone hence replacement. New one leaking though. Main seal, sump and these other places. Speedo union looks ok but it’s everywhere. Bit disappointed to be honest as it’s another 300 mile round trip to get it sorted. Is there no quality control on all these replacement parts?
J type engagement / disengagement harshness is down to the dash pot / regulator.
Mine had become so harsh it fractured the exhaust bracket that bolts to the O/D. Investigation showed the ‘O’ ring in the dashpot had
disintegrated, the internal bore was also quite badly scored. Changed the whole dashpot assembly for new ( about £100), now very smooth.
Operation below 35-40mph is barely noticed now, but you will always feel it at higher speeds particularly disengaging.
Who did the refurb ?, shouldn’t leak much oil at all, mine doesn’t leak.

Thanks Neil. The unit supplied by a company called OD Spares in Rugby.

Your oil leak looks like it’s just the O/P flange oil seal, can be changed fairly easily by somebody with experience without
removing anything apart from that end of the prop shaft.
I suppose it depends on brief O/D Spares were given, just change the Cone Clutch or do a full refurb,
either way it's a doddle to change all 'O' rings and oil seals on the bench and it would be a false economy not to do that.
I found mine was leaking from the bolts securing the brake ring. At least a couple do need copper washers and did I install them but it was still seeping from others so in the end I added copper washers to all I could get to, that solved all the leaks.
I would clean it completely and see exactly where the leaks are coming from, I think some talc helps. Perhaps that rear seal is just covered in oil that has been blown back there by the airflow? But after a second look at the pictures I’m wondering if the output flange has a ding that is upsetting the seal?
while you do not need to use the clutch to engage or disengage the j-type overdrive, I do find that lifting off the throttle gives a nice smooth engagement or disengagement.
