Strut top mount

Hi guys, I am currently refurbing my front suspension and brakes.

Can I have your opinion on the condition of the top mount ?

Looks like it is on the way out to me

Heard that new ones are not too good. I am trying to resist the roller top mounts from CW as they are rather spendy

I have just replaced one of mine.

I think roller bearing ones would be a good modification, how much are they?

The roller bearing top mounts are, imho, worth every penny.

ok I now have the offside off and this looks better than the nearside one.

The bearings in both sides are operating very smoothly. No binding or other perceptible issues. Just the rubber bonding in the nearside mount looks like to be on its way out.

The CW roller mounts are £389.40 for a pair, exchanged.

Be a shame to handover a good one in exchange and seeing how mine seem to operate smoothly I have some doubts I will feel any difference on the road.

The new rubber ones are crap and need extra work to get them to work right. get the ones from Chris Witor.

I fought to get mine to be smooth and non-binding after rebuilding them and gave up as the reproductions are so poor. I bought the CW roller tops and could not be happier. Fit and forget.

I have had far worse top mounts than yours last for years.
Last time I fitted a pair of repro ones, one failed totally within 3000 miles.
Personally I would re use those, unless you are fitting the Witor specials

Thanks Neil I may take this approach if I do not find a decent replacement mount to use. Ok it might be a job I have to revisit in a couple of years or so but it will save me near £400 and it is not a difficult job to do.

I dismantled the struts today and the mount though looking a bit dried out and cracking, the rubber was still well fixed to the steel casing.

One thing I found that though both struts looked the same age, amount of rust and similar split gaiters, one had a castelled nut with split pin on top and the other a nyloc nut. As per my pictures above, not sure if that means they are of different age 🤔

Only thing I found was the new sleeves being supplied were slightly undersized to fit…. Need reaming out.
