I have a customers manual w/overdrive unit here for rebuild & its the 1st time in its life it has been apart. It's seriously worn out so I wonder has anyone got a unit to sell so I can make one out of two?
Thanks in advance. Geoff
Auto transmission rebuilding since 1979 - for my sins!
I used a TR6 OD box as a donor for my very early Stag box, If its a J type and depending on what parts you need Later Post 74? TR6 Boxes have many common parts, the main difference is the Layshaft which you would probably just replace with new and the input shaft but many of the gears/synchros and mainshaft are the same. Rimmers are useful to find common parts, go to the part from the Stag listings and see if its also used in TR.
I wrote some of this up for the USA Stag Mag, attached below.

Tony white might have another box for you.
however , it’s likley some new parts will still be required too.
be careful with layshafts…. A couple of years ago they were dreadfully made & wouldn’t even fit …. Due to poor grinding that was eccentric.
buy the best synchros available…. There were two options for these.
use quad ring seals for the selector rods if possible.
input shaft bearing installation is critical to keep it quiet…. Ideally timken & pushed in with a brace & threaded bar / collar.
it’s similar to a small tractor transmission fwiw.
needs a 14” + long lever to operate …. Oops I’ll get my coat.
Geoff,
I am really surprised you have a very worn out manual gearbox. I took mine apart at 80K miles to overhaul it and was shocked to see a regular sequence lines on the gear mating surfaces. Only after a while I realised that these were the original machining marks. So no measurable wear at all. I did replace the bearings and synchromesh cones once apart, but not sure that I needed to. Now at 165K miles and no perceptible issues. Overdrive is still untouched. It seems rare from others accounts that these boxes fail. I am curious to know what parts are worn out?
Mike
