    Gearbox top cover photo?

Has anyone got a photo of the gearbox top cover showing the reverse and overdrive switch locations? 'J' type overdrive.....I managed to install mine in the car with the switches wired the wrong way around - now I have reversing lamps in 3rd and top gear, and can only select overdrive in reverse!! I need to plan the easiest way to swap the wiring - without removing the exhaust and dropping the gearbox. Grr!

I made the same mistake, I could only put the cables right with difficulty. Without dismantling the exhaust or gearbox.
Yellow is on top = OD
Green on the side = reversing light

Thank you! Now I just have to make a plan. It should be okay to reach the side mounted switch, I wonder if I can get my hand to the top mounted switch after removing the gearstick?

You won't get to top one through gear lever hole I doubt, but isn't there a large grommet under the coin tray ?.

Yes, it has a rubber cover in front of the gear lever. Unfortunately, it is on the side of the switch. I managed it with a pair of angled pliers. It's tedious because the visibility is poor.

Yes, of course - that hole in mine has gaffer tape over it at the moment, so thanks for reminding me it is there! I was fearing that I'd have to take the exhausts off and lower the gearbox to get those switches corrected and I wasn't looking forward to that at all. You have reassured me that the mistake is not going to delay the rebuild too much at all.

            Thamk you!

              Great photo from Gaeda.

be really good to have access grommets for all switch locations…. Not just auto inhibitors etc.

last time I posted a picture of this it was apparently from a tr6…. Which isn’t the same apparently.
              … seems bonkers.

reminds me of working on a Jensen interceptor… the no 7&8 spark plug was accessed via the transmission tunnel… which was enormous to allow the torque-flight transmission to fit.

sorry to say, I think reverse & overdrive selection is a fatal attraction, so to speak.

Yellow on the top for O/D, Green for rev lamps on the side.

I once owned a Renault 16. Try one of those if you want inaccessible spark plugs..... I rallied a Hillman Imp once too - must be a sucker for punishment.

Interesting that you have a blank in the 2nd gear switch position.. is that usual?

I did same, cut a 25mm hole above terminals and made it easy, fitted a blank grommett.

In my case, it was original. I found several pictures of Stag gearboxes on the internet where there was also a screw in the "2-speed" hole.

There are some cars which use this gearbox that have overdrive available on 2nd as well. IFAIR the V8 provides too much torque for the overdrive to cope with in 2nd gear....

I think there are a large number of top cover configuration.. I think I read it was in excess of 10! Triumph removed the 2nd gear option part way through the TR6 production run. The effect of low down torque was mooted as a reason and it coincided with a change of overdrive type. But in the end 2nd gear OD was kinda Jerky so perhaps not that useful. I have it on my supercharged six and very rarely use it.
