Inlet manifold sealing

Just recently my cylinder heads have been on and off a couple of times,the garage that replaced my head gaskets in November changed my inlet manifoldas well for a better condition one and put the gaskets on with no sealant and I had no leaks,so when I put the inlet manifold back on the other day I also put the gaskets on with no sealant and guess what,no leaks,they were County brand as well not Payen.None of the bolts were over tight either.

Before that manifold was changed it use to be Payen gaskets,left overnight stuck to the head before re-assembly,and a bottle of K-seal and I would still have to re-tighten up a couple of bolts to stop a trickle with the risk of stripping the threads.

So if youve got a constant battle to keep the v dry with leaking manifold gaskets it might be worth finding a better second hand inlet manifold.

Manifold mounting faces are often warped with regular overtightening.

With care, the application of a large coarse file can often sort out sealing problems.

It is always useful to have a spare though, in case you get carried away with the file

Have got my inlet manifolds back on again - should I leave it over night before starting, I used wellseal on both sides of the gasket, or will the heat of the engine help to set the wellseal?

Thats interesting Neil,worth checking the manifold before reassembly for this.

Im no expert Al but that stuff wont go off anyway,I wouldnt have thought it would make any difference if you put it back on now or tomorrow,but best wait for someone with a bit more mechanical knowledge than myself.
