    Power Steering

Took the Stag out for a spin due to sun being out. All of a sudden the power steering packed up. Got home to find fluid down the side of the pump and in engine bay. The fluid forced its way out the cap. Removed cap and fluid was around halfway up the tank. Is it pump that is faulty, or steering rack? Any idea's would be appreciated, thanks.

I held off answering because Im not sure what could cause that, hoping someone else would come up with an idea. The pump is the easiest and cheapest to deal with so Ideally I would have the pump pressure tested first, it should be around 850psi perhaps it’s bypassing from a faulty bypass valve causing the oil to “boil” or it’s managing to suck in air somewhere? I can’t imagine anything in the rack that would do that.

Here's my theory. you mention ps packed up. As you manually turned steering to get home, fuild from with the rack is being pushed out of the rack into the pump. since the pump is not pumping fluid into the rack, that excess fluid is coming out of the cap. rebuild your pump would be the first thing I'd do. I have a YouTube video on how u can bench test a pump.
