So I am at the point where I need to remove the rear subframe and the diff, at the moment I have the car sitting on axle stands mounted under the rear sub frame, where is the best place to put them
On short wood planks under both rear floor end seems is what I did, used 2" thick planks about 12" long.
Assuming those seems aren't all rusty & weak - they don't look to be though.

Its pretty solid to be fair, few holes in the usual places but nothing too major
I've always used stands with a plate on top that locates on the rear sill jacking points. Works on the front jacking points too.
First time I stripped the rear suspension off mine, I done the same with a block of 4x2" timber sitting in the axle stand yokes with a hole drilled for the jacking point stud. For extra stability I also had a length of 10x2" timber pinched up to the rear floor using a bottle jack. Once the 2 diff mount bolts, 2 outer subframe bolts and straps, shocks, brake pipes and cables, exhaust etc disconnected I was able to roll out the complete rear suspension from the back on my own using a trolly jack.
Thanks for input guys, all sorted now, wens a little over the top with 5 axle stands (one under the diff), and a jack (under the diff mounting bracket), and then took each subframe arm off in turn, then repositioned the axle stands so I have one under the jacking points and one under the outer subframe arm mounting position, with wood to spread the weight.
A bit over the top probably, but didnt fancy dying under my stag after all the work I have put into stripping it.
Now to get my brother (a welder) to make me a car dolly
