All,
Many of you will know how, after 10 year of ownership, my 2 biggest gripes about the Stag is the noisy diff (it's now on its 3rd) and leaking exhaust - also on its 3rd.
Yesterday I took the Stag over to a friends house and together we changed the diff mounting bushes to the 'aero' versions, in the hope that this will make the diff noise more bearable. Time will tell...
However, in doing so, we had to remove the back sections of the exhaust system. When refitting it, we ran into problems, similar to those experienced by the exhaust bay that I had paid to fit it. The pipes that ran through the rear subframes where hard pressed against it - they didn't clear. No amount of joggling would make it fit. It the end we bolted it up and thought we'd leave it as it was.
The front pipes have also leaked, despite several attempts to repair, so we turned the car around and had a look at them. It transpires the exhaust boxes were too far back.
After studying the layout, from the front to the back, the penny finally dropped.
The cross pipe (H pipe) between the front silencers was too long (wide) pushing the two exhaust runs too far apart. We removed the system and trimmed off half a inch.
The 2 silencers were refitted (now closer together). We refitted all the pipes and bingo - everything fits!
There are still some minute blowing at 2 joints but the drive home was fantastic.
I am convinced that the system was resonating through the car, adding to the cabin noise.
I now have a lovely burble coming from the rear of the car... not all around it.
The system is a Double S system. If you are having problems with yours, its worth a look.
Best Regards
Chris
