I have so many questions...
I have a new diff to fit. Is there a gasket between the diff and the diff nose?
If I'm changing my diff, what seals or bearings should I also change? I can't really see where these are from any diagrams.
Klaus, that photo you just posted, is that an oil seal at the front of the diff? And is this the right replacement?

Is it worth replacing the quill shaft itself, and the bearing, is that a diff nose off job, or just prop shaft off and tap it out?
Lastly, this video was very helpful in figuring out how to take the diff out:

Chix, some answers to your questions:
1. The parts catalogue doesn't show a gasket. I have used Dirko but it is hard to get off again. This time I used Blue Hylomar which can be wiped off with a solvent.
2. For an overhaul change the diff nose oil seal as shown in my picture and check the ball bearing in the diff extension (page 4-32 in the parts book).
3. The pic shows the seal in the diff nose. I managed to get it out with an appropriate srew driver and a hammer several times.
4. It is a diff+extension out job. Replacing the quill shaft? That depends how it looks like. If there is a grove from the oil seal lip you could tap the new seal 2 mm further in or use a speedy sleeve.
Hope that helps.

Bumping - so much for my advice on page 1...
I've spent the last few months slowly refurbishing my rear end inspired by oil dripping from the front of the diff.
After spending too much time waiting to repair a frayed diff mounting bracket yesterday I refilled the diff with EP80/90 and got ready to refit.
This morning there is a pool of oil.
I replaced the pinion oil seal with a new nylon-style seal after taking out the leaking metal/leather version.
Before fitting I checked for grooves/marks on the quill shaft - nothing visible, nothing feelable.
Any advice/ideas?
EDIT - ignore the above.
Because there was so much oil I had a rethink and realised the seal only works if it seals on both edges!!!.
For any other numpties out there - do not carefully fill the diff through the filler hole BEFORE installing into the car.Last edited by Rigid; 2 February 2025, 15:37.Richard
