    Wiring and bonnet pad

Continuing the long journey to get my Stag Mk 2 on the road, I have a couple of queries. I vaguely recall that the wiring loom runs to the rear of the cabin in a channel. Is this on the right or the left hand side before I start ripping out carpets and seats? Secondly, is the bonnet insulation pad glued on or is it held in place by the mounting kit?

I look forward to getting the wisdom of the group.

Wiring runs on both sides along a channel in the inner sill. RH to the fuel pump and t-bar, LH to the rear lights.

Underbonnet insulation is not glued, it’s fixed by the four steel plates and a crossbar - all pop-rivetted on.

Thanks for that. I had installed the pad with the plates and crossbar but wondered if it needed glue as well. I’ll now look for the wiring on both sides!

I would remove and store bonnet insulation. Gets warm enough in there.

The centre of the pad can touch the top of the air filter and wear a hole in the black surface. To stop this happening, I glued the centre of the pad to the bonnet. This gives a bit more clearance.

Bonnet pad is for sound insulation. Removing it will make no difference to underbonnet temperature, unless you have bonnet louvres which are not needed unless you have a serious engine/power upgrade.

I used spray glue over 15 years ago, just the 4 stainless plates & no crossbar. Still holding firmly now.

I think it may also be there to protect the paintwork from deterioration.. With hot sun on top, and hot metal below the paint could easily be affected with discolouration and crazing.

That's the reason why the paintwork on my bonnet is covered in small cracks. Both the previous owner and his predecessor drove the car in Spain for several years without an insulation pad.

Absolutely - you beat me to it! Have had a couple of "hot" engined cars with matt and crazed bonnet paint.

Our Stag has been running without a bonnet insulation pad for the past 14 years with no detriment to it's paintwork.

Sound insulation? Give me a break, the Stag is a convertible fitted with a V8 and large exhausts!

Heat insulation? Why would you want to keep the heat in the engine bay?

                      Regards

                      Bruce

What would you suggest it was fitted for? After all, BL were not known for spending money on their products unnecessarily. Many modern cars have them fitted, and have done for decades.

The Later federal stags did not have the bonnet pads, due to hotter country? I installed one on mine cos it looked right!

Yet they also installed pads on the firewall and the transmission tunnel…..

the engine rarely sounds nicer than the exhaust
