Hi, I’m travelling from Bilbao to Murcia in the summer and wanted to visit a few Spanish cities on the way. Does anyone have experience of the Spanish Clean Air Zones and whether the Stag is allowed? What documents are needed etc. Any advice will be gratefully received.

I went to the Spanish grand prix last year, driving my 37 year old mercedes through France and Spain. Stayed in Barcelona for a few days too. I tried multiple times to register the car, in both countries. In Barcelona you can purchase daily tickets for 5€ allowance for non ulez compliant cars. But after several attempts, even sending copies of my v5, insurance etc, i could not get a response. There are websites to register the car but whether the car was too old I could not get it done. Gave up trying and just went in the end. I drove through middle of Rouen in France and I felt certain I would get a fine through the post. Nothing. Zilch. Whether 37+ year old cars are exempt I am not sure, or I was just lucky. I carried documents with me, cannot remember exactly but I think they are required to be in the car, possibly in France. As are hi viz jackets, triangles, spare bulbs, medical kits, etc plus 2 bottles of wine and crisps. Something to clean windscreen as bugs are very prevalent, just as they were here many decades ago.

There’s been correspondence on this elsewhere on the Forum. My contact the former President of FIVA told me that most countries in the EU (and France in particular) agreed on exemption to cars over 30 years old. Drew added something to the extent that in Germany you would need to display an historic vehicle notice from the likes of FIVA. Drew will doubtless clarify further.
Meantime my 1977 Stag is exempt if driven in Paris, Grenoble, Lyon, etc. I had no problem driving through the outskirts of Zurich and Schaffhausen in Switzerland this last summer.
