    Diff output flange seals

Do i need to press out output shafts from housings to replace seals?
Theres that much crud & oil on casing i dont know if they are leaking! Now the diff is out it would make sense to replace them but i dont have a press.

Seals I don’t think so, but it’s been a while bearings definitely although I’ve done 2 sets now. First drive shafts came out easily, second set took a bit more persuasion. I also put some sealant on the flanges when I put them back together. Wellseal I think I used.

Output shafts come out easily, but separating the flange from the shaft to replace the seal needs a press or bearing puller

Sounds far fetched but going back to my TR have successfully separated 4 pairs of output shafts by bolting them up together. One side separates and afterwards the other comes apart with a simple 3 leg puller.. I guess it’s started already.. I have never used a press.

Three legged pullers work ok providing you don’t distort the flange with too much pressure.
I use a three legged puller, wind it up until it looks like it might bend something, then apply the magic ingredient.
This consists of a pair of hammers, one of which goes on one side of the flange. The other hammer is then used to whack the opposite side of the flange and the shock will normally separate the tapers. This technique has worked on probably a dozen output shafts over the years without bending a single one. I first tried with a straight pull and bent a flange hence the modified technique

When I did mine recently I modified the hub puller I have for the rear hubs on my old 1950's Standard 8 & 10's. Made short work of them and doesn't stress the flange too much.
