PHEWW certainly got an answer there then, many thaks people. Taking your Stag to view Icelandic Volcano's Peter ? YOU must be sure yours runs well then [with water wings no doubt]

Rimmers today told me my catalohue IS correct, but as their engine man [sub-contractor] has retired, they no longer have stock or found anyone else they can trust, to replace him. Fair enough.

My Riley RMA went to a "Talking the talk" midlands chap who suddenly sent a £900 bill [ to remove & FULLY strip engine] A it was only a big end jobB ie no need to totally strip oil / water pumps, all head, dizzy, etc, C no mention of a "stage payment" this was 4 weeks AFTER the quoted 6 weeks for the job, & as the original figure quoted was "around £1500" [ie total price] I got dubious. THEN I discovered he'd sub contracted it out anyway............... After then saying I mis-understood & I should be thinking "around £3k"to complete [what ? on top or total ???] I retreived the car & a box full of engine bits which all got sold on [thankfully I still was in pocket overall, as a second Riley made a BIG profit for me...........] A sorry tale we all can learn from !! so worth telling.

Hence I'm more dubious. I shall follow up on your suggestions, thanks. Engine still runs, but a rather "Groinching" noise [ie not a "rattle"] when opening throttle from front end, low down, area. Oil probably got rather low [1litre in 100 miles burning]

The last two engine jobs I have heard about cost £4k and £5k from the two most well known people. Good jobs but that is a lot of dosh.

The graunching from the front might be a viscous fan coupling - when they fail they can make scary noises.

Or Alternator bearing, mine made hell of a noise when it went and sounded like it was coming from inside the engine at the front. Also check the bottom hosejubilee clipisnt catching on the alternator fan.

You beat me to it, I thought I was going to be doing T/Chains but took the fan belt off and run it again much to my relief.
