I am changing the master cylinder and when I separated it from the servo the picture shows what came out. Can anyone tell me what the star washer is for and where it goes please?
when I separated my master cylinder from the servo. that rod didn't come out of the servo. maybe it was used to hold the rod in the servo and has broken
Yes, that black rod should be fixed inside the servo, and then it just slots inside the master cylinder loosely and pushes it when pedal is pushed. You’ll need to find a diagram of the servo to see how it is supposed to be fixed in place (and how easy to fit it back). Good luck.
Those star washers dislodge very easily if you are trying to change the master cylinder without removing the servo. They usually poke back into place pretty easily.

One side effect of changing the brake master cylinder - the stop lamp switch may be ineffective. I changed mine back in the winter and I've only just noticed that my brake lights wouldn't go off. I had to double-side sticky a 2mm spacer to the brake pedal arm where it meets the stop lamp switch.

The switch bracket can to tweaked to adjust the switch position… better than a spacer that will probably fall of at some point
Agree with Julian - I had to reposition the brake light switch on my car after changing the brake master cylinder - only needs a slight change in the brake pedal position to require this. Easy job.
