    Steering wheel cover

Bored with the recent wet weather, and the golf course resembling a swamp, I decided to have a go at improving the feel of the Stag's 50-year-old thin rim steering wheel. I bought a kit from eBay which arrived today and spent an hour in the garage fitting it. Quite pleased with the result and looking forward to trying it out when the weather improves.

That looks very smart. I'm tempted to have a go myself.

Nice job! Looks like it has always been there. Is it real leather? So often what is advertised as leather turns out to be synthetic.

Real leather Mike. Less than 20 quid and from a local supplier.

eBay item 155318121899. Select 14.5" diameter, 2.75" circumference.

Looks great! Did you fit it straight over the existing rim covering? I'd like to have a thicker-feeling wheel rim, the original feels very thin.

Left the original in place, so it is now slightly thicker as I wanted.

The seller has a link to a YouTube video showing how to fit it. Note that the one supplied is different to that shown in the video.

                  Hi Dave

                  Looks really professional and factory-finish.

Looking at your dials you have a Mk2 ? So I assume your steering wheel is the smaller diameter with a slightly thicker grip compared to a MK1 ? (I retro-fitted a Mk2 to my '72 Mk1 as preferred the smaller diameter but it may have even been from a Dolomite or later 2000S as it has plastic inserts on the spoke holes). I recall the MK2 grip is a shiny spongy plastic type so does this leather cover slip / twist when in place or is adhesive used as well ?

My MK1 was a thin leather grip and has began to harden and rot after years of storage. I see from the eBay listing you order by diameter and grip thickness so that's a bonus and not a "One size fits all". Going on my shopping list !!

                  Thanks for sharing...Cheers... Ray

                    Hi Ray,

Mine is the original 14.5" Mk2 leather wheel. I haven't used any glue as it is a tight fit and the cover has a raw leather finish on the inside surface. Time will tell if it is durable, but I am unable to twist the cover around the wheel.

Plastic inserts were fitted to Stag steering wheels during the last year or so of production.

You will need the next size up if you are fitting over the existing rim covering 75mm or 70mm wide (14.5 wheel) if taking the old one off.

I bought 14.5" x 2.75" and it fits without removing the original cover.

Nice. Something to put on the list of wet weather jobs. Our golf course is also struggling.

I agree; 2.75" is a bit narrow over the existing, 2.9" would have been better, but a great idea thanks Dave.

Good call! I've done several steering wheels over the years and have had the leather strip for the Stag since years. Could never see me nowadays having the time to cut it and use the sewing machine to make the holes. Ordered one now off the Bay!
