    Wiring suppliers

    Hi Forum,

So much for Bank Holiday top down motoring this weekend!

Taking the opportunity to start a long delayed job I've been avoiding... some wire replacement in the loom.

Does anyone know of a decent supplier that stocks loom wiring in original colouring?

I'm particularly looking for the yellow/white and pink/white wires that come off the ignition coil - the yellow runs to the starter and the pink seems to be ignition bypass.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Pink/white wire is a special type as it is the ballast resistor and is spliced into the loom. Plain pink/white won't do it. Ask Autosparks what they use.

It’s high nickel content so I’m not sure how easy it will be to solder repair if that’s what you need to do Taroz. There are 2 options if you can’t fix it - don’t use it and fit a coil for no ballast or fit a mk1style external ballast in its place.

            Hi all,

Thanks very much for all the really helpful advice and info.

I had a short through the yellow/white - due to insulation rubbing near the starter and earthing itself, causing the whole wire insulation to melt but little other damage.... a few years back I'd replaced the original starter so this wire was unconnected and redundant - so no fuss there and now easily replaced seeing as I've unwrapped the loom in the engine bay.

Oddly, the pink/white one started from the coil as a yellow/white wire... then on the left hand bank of the engine bay, it was spliced with the pink/white before entering the inside of the car (when looking at Propsero's coloured wiring diagram this colour mismatch at coil point confused things greatly!). The yellow/pink for this section is totally fine, however the pink/white burnt out. This is all original wiring so someone at BL had apparently ran out of pink/white and kindly used yellow/white spliced in at the end.

Anyway, I'll check my coil but I think I might have already replaced it with a non-ballasted one.... think this will be my route to get back on the road... though I do fancy a bit of a tidy up on the pink/white wire... though going into the cabin, it will not be fun.... maybe for another year!

            Thanks again all.

No one I’ve asked can supply this wire now.

Did get some a few years back.

only seems possible from USA now…

be great to here of a U.K. stockist though.

The joint for the wire is at an external loom ‘wart’ behind the speedo.

I've done quite a bit of Marine engine wiring with cable from VWP, they use standard car colours.

                      Thanks again all,

Tried calling all those suppliers today and, rightly so, no-one open on a Saturday!

Back on the hunt again at the start of the week and will report back on any success with ballast resistor wire.

AutoSparks say that they do not use ballasted wiring in their loom... wonder if they let Mk2 owners know this when supplying them.

Oddly my chassis number was showing as a Mk 1 on their books (it's not and confirmed by SOC Registrar as a Mk2...), plus they didn't have wiring schematics for my LHD, A/C non US model configuration... therefore, could anyone help with letting me know the gauge of the yellow/white wire so I can try to get some?

                        Thanks again,

Hi Tariq. not original, but when I ran into a wire issue, I used a section of the old good wire at each end and joined a generic wire in the middle. I taped the wire to the rest of the loom and wrapped with original looking tape. no one other than me will know.

Hi Sujit, many thanks for the suggestion. I'd already pulled off the loom wrapping tape in the engine bay to check the condition of the other wires in there. However, I did something similar in running a cosmetic only wire to the starter as it was redundant anyway. Appreciate the idea.

Be great to hear of a supplier of the resistive wire.

Have tried myself and so far no places can supply.

I don’t even know what the resistance value is per metre.

                              Can anyone help?

None of the mentioned suppliers in this thread can …. I’ve called them all up…. Unless I’m not describing it correctly.
