BW35 final output movement

Good afternoon. I have a significant leak from the output shaft area on my Stag BW35 gearbox. I have got the exhaust and propshaft off, thinking it will just be the shaft seal. With the propshaft off, there is a lot of lateral movement to the splined shaft in the gearbox.

somehow this doesn’t seem normal but I am struggling to find any info on bearing / bush that should give support inside the gearbox. Am I missing something?

It isn't right.
There is a bush in the end of the tail extension behind the oil seal. Extension has to come off to renew the bush.
(it was 30+ years ago when I did one of those - non stag but the same arrangement - Jaguar)

Gavin. As far as I know it is perfectly normal to have lateral movement in the splined shaft with the propshaft removed. It is designed to be supported by the front end of of the shaft which runs in that bush in Neil's picture. The bush should only need replacing if there is lateral movement when the propshaft is in place.
It is a pretty unsatisfactory arrangement which was improved on the 65 box which has a proper bearing and flange like a manual box.
