    Stag original underbody colour

I started a task of dealing with the leak from the tail end of my gearbox. By the time the exhaust and propshaft were off, this became a sensible time to remove the aged under seal from the underbody.

fortunately anywhere the ATF had migrated to for any period of time. The under seal was soft and came of like butter. Sadly not the case all over. But can I ask. Would this normally have been applied directly to the car whilst still in red primer?

This seems to be the case for the whole car. Removal of the under seal reveals it is straight on primer…

    Regards

I don’t believe the underside of cars were painted body colour at the factory.

The 3 wheel arches I have stripped seem to have a very thin coat of top coat and then underseal, the floor seems to be red oxide, and again the boot floor thin top coat like over spray then underseal, my tunnel is red oxide, grease and oil from BW35

Similarly to MandM above. On stripping my front wheelarch areas there seemed to be evidence of a light coat of body colour which came off with the underseal using a heat gun and scraper. If I recall the floor panel / outriggers were only red oxide.

That all sounds like mine. I have stumbled upon less rust than I was expecting, but nevertheless some welding will be reqd to get a mot I suspect. Any advice or good reviews on someone to carry out welding / repairs in the Eastbourne area would be welcome.

          Regards

Hi Gavin, I'm in Eastbourne & have recently gone through a bare shell resto on mine, unfortunately the guy who welded mine has retired, it may be worth asking Pilbeams on Diplock's way, Hailsham who they would recommend, mine was done at their place by the now retired guy. Geoff

Many thanks for that. If you are free one day to cast your eye over mine I would welcome any input. Feel free to PM me if you are up for a rendezvous.

Mine is just surfacing after a bare metal, bare shell resto. Under the underseal it was predominantly red primer. late '73 car.

One of the wheel arches of mine when I scraped the underseal off back in 2013. All 4 were the same, as were beneath the floor pans and boot floor.

It was red primer, Paul. We coated that with red oxide, then body colour.
