Has anyone experienced rust eating away at the expansion tank shelf? I just noticed a hole in the now paper-thin steel shelf w hich, though not structural, looks unsightly. I would be interested if anyone else has found this issue and has resolved it, or made ift look better. See photo

It's a Stag, they rot everywhere there is bare metal.
This bit generally rots from underneath due to lack of underseal.
If you just want to tidy the appearance then skim it with fibreglass and paint it, making sure the underside is properly sealed against water.
It will hide it until something else in the area justifies doing the job properlyNeil

Having just spent a smeg over 150 hours of customer money to repair rust that had developed under a skim of fibreglass across the width of a bulkhead on a Range Rover Classic I would not recommend a skim fibreglass over anything that I wanted to keep.
It is a bit tight to get into but the rust could be cut out and a repair welded in. Be careful though that once you start to pick at the edges you may find things that you were not expecting.
If you wanted to work around the expense of welding and just wanted a tidy up, cut out a piece of cardboard and wedge it into place, replace as and when it gets tattyStags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony
