And so to the Stag Hood.....

Following on from the subject of engine trashings, similar things can be said in mitigation of the hood design.

Again, it was often the manufacture that let it down. Having worked on hundreds of them, I know of a few failings in the manufacture which made them become troublesome.

Bolts were sometimes not properly tightened and came loose. But admittedly, some of the 1/4 UNF bolts were not up to the job, and they broke at the stress riser point. And the use of rounded slotted bolt heads didn't exactly lend themselves to application of adequate torque when tightening - I developed bad tennis elbow trying to do those up!

The other weakness was that some frames are made with soft steel arms which easily bent out of shape. Once that happened, this made the use of the hood erratic and unpredictable, and often led to it being given a good shove which only makes things worse. Come on guys, I bet some of you have been there?

Failures also often occur through lack of maintenance, but no mention was made in the schedules that a little oil on all the pivots would help keep it all moving.

But some cars were fitted with hoods that were well built and maintained and have survived well beyond their design life, so again how can the design be all bad?

I’ve only just replaced my original hood due to a split window, so mine must have been one of the better ones, it had the vybak original stamped in the Perspex

The design is a work of genius. The people who did this must have been very bright sparks the way it only folds away in the right sequence. Sellers should give all new owners a mandatory course in how to operate the hood. That is assuming they know themselves. I think I must have come across all the textbook foul ups on my frame (although I might have caused some of them).

And I would have probably ended up throwing the whole thing in a skip in a fit of temper if it had not been for all the advice from this forum.
Remember the wheeler dealers episode where they did just that, skipped the old one

Since it was my comment on the other thread that prompted Wheelz to start this one I need to contribute.
My main gripe is the corner windows on the Mk1 - there seems to be no way to install the hood and make them neat and 'flat'
I've adjusted the whole thing so the rear window is nice and tight but the corners? forget it.

I so wish I bought the Mk2 type.

Not too concerned about the folding sequence - well not since I spent 2 weeks tweaking the side catches so they were in a position to neatly click into place.

Im sure its only you that will notice the wrinkles. 2 weeks is a lot of tweaking. I had to file out a lot of metal in the fixing holes to get my stagweber ones to align, but they work great now

My Mk1 hood from Aldridge that I fitted myself has tight corner windows. It is a PITA to fold up neatly without creasing the corner windows unless there is someone available to hold the rear hoop in the correct position while the side windows are carefully curved with no creases. I have been meaning to cut an appropriate length of broom handle to do the job for about 8 years now but still haven't got round to it.

I am probably going to install a MK1 hood on my MK2 next year as they are just so much nicer to drive with the hood up

As Neil said, when erected the Mk1 hood is much nicer and makes the interior brighter & airy compared to the Mk2 version. Yes, the corner windows can be a bugger but a soft karate chop across the middle of each when folding it away seems to help.

Many mk1 cars now sport a mk2 hood.

The mk1 windows were a bit of extra folding away trouble that most didn’t want / need.

Leave the hood up for an hour or so in the sun and any creases in the hood windows should disappear.

Likewise its best to fold the hood and windows when warm as they are much more pliable.

As mentioned in the other thread the mercedes R107 1971-1989, has similar hood design to the mk1 stag, with corner windows. There was no updated design even in the later years as they did not follow the stag mk2 design with no corner windows.

When installed properly there should be no wrinkles in the corner windows after being put up for a while. Visibility is much better with the corner windows as I remember from my previous stag of many years ago. I also think the car looks much better with them, but thats my personal choice of course.
