    Steering Rack Mount Bushings

I’m planning to refresh the suspension all round with new polybushes and there’s a lot of help online and in Haynes/ROM for most. Hoping to tackle the front of the Stag tomorrow, however I’m struggling to find guidance on the steering rack mount bushings. Do I need to remove the rack to replace or can the bushings be replaced with the rack still in place? Any tips or walkthroughs would be greatly appreciated.

Philly. Be very careful which hardness of poly bush you fit if you are doing them "All round".They are good replacements for the original rubber (metalastic) ones, but can be problematic when used to replace the simple rubber ones. I know that some of the aftermarket ones are rubbish, but well made ones are available.

You can do them without removing the rack, take the “L” brackets off one side at a time and the bushings, which are in the crossmember, can be dealt with.

Only comment I have is that I installed “comfort blue” bushings there, whilst I have no complaints about them otherwise, for the steering rack After 2 years or so i found them too soft, the steering was definitely shifting. I installed some harder bushings and all is fine.

one lesson learned from me over 20 years ago on replacing the steering rack bushes,

I used superflex and had no issues with the install nor steering feel afterwards*.

My issue was that I failed to acknowledge the subtle change in geometry of the rack location to the car. as a result the intermediate shaft was running ever so slightly tight and that gave some very odd steering related issues. Simply loosening the pinch bolts and winding the steering lock to lock before retightening fixed that.

Rack, intermediate shaft and bushes are still on the car and in good service.
