    Dead ignition

    Just when I was thinking I'd finished everything (yea, right).... For a while I'd been irritated by the inhibitor switch (BW65) only allowing starting in P, and not N; also the reversing lights' operation was unreliable. Playing around with adjusting the selector linkage didn't get me anywhere so I decided to bite the bullet and order a new switch. Fitted it, following which everything was now working OK. Coming to start the car the next day, I found that intermittently, on turning the key the ignition would be dead - no IGN or OIL lights and nothing happening when turning the key to the start position. Sometimes it would start to crank then stop, with the warning lights going out. Without thinking too hard about it I reasoned that I had possibly not put the plug and socket connecting the inhibitor switch back together well enough, so crawled underneath and had a go at cleaning the pins and sockets, spraying with contact cleaner etc. Initially it seemed OK, but then a few days later I found the problem was still present. This morning I was going to take the car out but on turning the key found that the fault was hard on - no warning lights, no starter motor - retrying it several times didn't work, so I left it and used my other car. Came back to it this afternoon, tried it and it was fine, started no problem. Battery and its connections are good, and other things, such as lights, are working. Trying to relate what's happening to the wiring diagram, I'm wondering if it must be the ignition switch? I had thought maybe the starter solenoid, but doesn't look like this would cause the warning lights to go out(?) Am I on the right track, or are there other things I should heck before diving into that?

    I would check the switch and the multiplug feeding it.

      If everything is going out I would check the battery wiring and the earth. Clean the posts on the battery and the inside of the wiring clamps. Also the bolt attaching the negative cable to the body.
