I'm gonna get straight to the point here. The 2.4 litre inline 3 that Triumph stick in their Rocket 3 Storm has remarkably similar performance figures to the V8 they put in the Stag.
I don't have an exact dyno chart, but it makes peak torque (~ 225nM) at 4,000 rpm, slightly over that of a stag, and makes peak horsepower (~ 180) at 7,000. The Triumph V8 made, I believe, 230nm of torque at 3500 rpm and 145hp at 5500.
these numbers don't match up perfectly, being a motorcycle engine - albeit a big one - the Rocket 3 revs a tad higher, and it does make slightly less torque.
That said, it'd be really interesting to see dyno charts for both of these engines side by side. Given that it makes generally more horsepower, I reckon the Rocket 3 engine probably would meet or exceed 145hp at 5500 RPM.
I'm not sure if anyone is ever going to do this, though if I ever have the means I'd like to try, but i reckon, with some ECU tuning and a supercharger to increase low rev power, the inline 3 from a Rocket Storm could power a Stag.
If anyone else has thought of this, or has more details on the characteristics of the Rocket 3 engine, feel free to comment.
