Duh! How do you search for "ignition key numbering"?

How do you search for 'ignition key numbering'?
The results I get are for 'ignition' only, quite a large return of results.
Whereas 'key' is rejected as probably going to result in too many results.

I've lost my one and only ignition key! I recall from somewhere that the key number can be found stamped on the ignition barrel, is this correct?

    Has anyone done this?

    John.
To my amazement, many years ago when I was having the car restored, we found an ignition key neatly screwed to the vertical panel behind the near side headlamps. I was told that it had been supplied like that which I found hard to believe, but it might be worth you having a look.

A heritage certificate should give you the key numbers unless they’ve been changed (although I think mine are original but don’t match the number on the certificate). The key number for the glovebox is on the barrel but I’ve not found it on the ignition barrel or door locks

Did a google search for ‘triumph stag ignition key number’

If anyone is needing new key blanks for the Stag, then I can recommend OS Keys. The correct blank is the UNI19: https://www.oskeys.co.uk/silca-uni19-key-blank-n16kb I ordered a couple on Monday afternoon and they arrived yesterday. Total price for two: £2.75 including postage and VAT. They can cut them for you, but they will

I think you’re either in for the heritage certificate route; a thorough search or a new / used ignition lock, which are available

            Mike,
Mine's been through a total strip, no key I afraid.

            Dave,
Heritage cert's fine if you're sure the lock's original.
In my file from previous owners, was safety pined in place, a disk stating 'keep safe' only record of key no. It was recognised by my not so local locksmith (8 miles away), who duly cut one for £10. Travelled back, it slid in the ignition beautifully but wouldn't turn. Returned to smithy to check, assured correct to number, so obviously the wrong record on the afore mentioned disk, 32 miles for nothing and down a tenner.

So my last hope is a number stamped somewhere, before having to resort to new lock and key assembly.

What about the SOC forum 'search' text string query?

I think you are asking about searching the forum. Unfortunately since the last “update” quotes an suchlike do not work any it ignores 3 letter words

best bet is to do the search in Google followed by site:socforum.com

                John,
Have you tried the new key in the door or fuel cap locks? Maybe only the ignition barrel has been changed? If you are sure the barrels are all the same, you could take one of the easily dismantled ones (fuel
or door) to your locksmith to see if he can make a key to suit.

A useful hint. I find the search on the forum pretty useless. Another unconnected forum I use, which has the same basic software, started supplying a Google search for forum items in addition to the one supplied. It gives much better results. Maybe that could be introduced here

Before the update a few years ago the forum search could use logic terms, such as AND OR and quotation marks to find stuff a lot easier.. why can’t the new version support that?

Look up 215804B on James Paddock's site.
I've managed to dismantle my ignition/steering lock from the steering column and strip it down. The key barrel section looks exactly like the one on Paddock's site. It's not listed under Stag! But instead for (early) Triumph 2000/2500/Sprints. So mine must already be a replacement??
Still, worth a try for £15 instead of £100+ for the entire assembly.
The strip down ended up being quite easy. I drilled out the locking pin, size for size, expecting then, that the barrel could be withdrawn. Well not really, finally yes. Initially it only allows the chome bezel to be drifted out unecessarily. However the barrel is really retained by a small circlip within the main body under the rectangular cover plate.
There are two clips, the larger one retains a dog tanged piece which drives the switch, don't touch it, I did and regretted it. The dog is sprung loaded, a spring through sideways with tiny ball bearings at each end, giving the detent feel when turning the key. I had fun finding those and even more reassembling.
Once the small clip is removed the barrel as 215804B can be withdrawn. The column steering lock tang, a brass block, is also sprung loaded, but less troublesome, the spring needing to be pushed in inorder for the barrel shaft to be reinserted.
Re clip, replace plate, find a spectacle hinge screw to replace the locking pin and your done.

The die cast spindle at the switch end is a pretty fragile design…. The cruciform shape almost breaches the wall thickness to nothing….. it cannot be increased afaiaa…larger diameter won’t fit the hole…. Perhaps that could be opened up?

I have an Stl file if you need one for 3D printing .

                          Pla material won’t work.

                          carbon fibre might.

all at your own risk though.
