    Hazard warning lights

I am doing pre-MOT checks on my 77 MkII and have discovered that the hazard warning lights are no longer working. The indicators are fine so after checking the fuses my next thought was a faulty hazard relay. However, besides the indicators flasher unit, I can't find one under the parcel shelf. The previous owner has taped up some wires next to the flasher unit. I connected a random flasher unit to them that I had lying around the workshop but this did nothing. TBH, it may already have been defunct and the hazards were working previously. So what am I missing here?

Those Black/Green and Purple/Slate wires are taped up on all but the Federal stags where they are for the Ignition Key Warning Buzzer.

Thanks for that. Just figured out there is no sepatate flasher for the hazards, correct? If so, is the most likely culpret the switch? I'll remove it and check the contacts.

Yes there is a separate flasher for the hazards, the indicators one is by the steering column.
The one you pictured is the Hazard one.

There is definitely a separate hazard flasher unit on the plate.
The 'Component Mounting Plate' has two flasher units.
The one in your second photo labelled 'FLASHER 12 V' is the 'Turn signal flasher unit'.
The hazard flasher unit is shown in your first photo, located on the top RH corner of the mounting plate (next to the horn relay).
Both flasher units are located in their correct positions in your photos.

Not sure how to check them, other may know. Could be the problem.

Not all Stags have indicator flasher on that mounting plate, some have it above the steering column held with a clip (mine has it this way) with a 1974 MK2 loom.

An easy was to test the hazards wiring & switch is, connect the two wires together on that flasher unit an on operation of the switch all indicators should illuminate.

When I bought my Stag the hazard flashers didn't work properly. Mine has the turning flasher by the steering wheel and the hazard unit behind the parcel shelf. It turned out that somebody had replaced the hazard unit with a turning one which is only intended to light one side at a time. If you replace it, make sure you get one intended as a hazard flasher. Mine actually passed the MOT with a strongly worded advisory to recommend that the hazard flashers were repaired. I may be paranoid but I felt that the recommendation was strong because it is a Triumph Stag!

As a matter of interest the back of the parcel shelf was very bent out of shape due to people pulling it down to get at the stuff behind it. I cured it by clipping on one of those long black A4 paper binders. The length was just right

Yes, I found my flasher under the dash. I'd actually refitted the faulty hazzard flasher 90 degrees out so that didn't help. A 2 pin flasher in a H4 style plug . However, the hazzard flasher is faulty. Tested it with a working flasher unit and it clicks when in operation but without the lights comming on. So I guess hazzard flashers have a different current rating. Also tested with your suggestion to bridge the flasher with a link wire and everything works.

Indeed, hazard flashers do have a higher current rating, they are designed to handle 4 x 21W instead of 2.

Well, that was irritating . Bought a GFU2204 4 x 21W flasher, and plugged it in; lights flashed rapidly then the rate slowly reduced until it packed in altogether. Lasted all of 10 seconds. The part was actually for a mini but had the correct part number. Would the extra side repeaters pull that much current to cause it to fail? Is there a specific flasher for the six indicator lamps on a Stag? I then discovered by trial and error that the indicators flasher was actually an unmarked hazard flasher, so swapped it over with a spare basic flasher I had and all is working now. Some of the simplest of jobs sent to try us eh.

The extra two side repeaters wouldn’t cause a flasher unit to fail. If it’s the old bimetallic type the they will just flash slower.
Fit an electronic version, just needs an earth adding to it.

+1 for the electronic flasher unit.

My car came with no hazard warning lights from the factory and surprisingly still had not been updated to have hazards 49 years later when I acquired it two years ago.

Especially with smart motorways and the like I dreaded the thought of breaking down without hazards.
Bought one of those so called Lucas hazard light switch kits. Not cheap when considering what you get.

The flasher unit included in the kit lasted all of two minutes before it failed.
Replaced it with an electronic flasher unit and it has been good for last two years now.

Why the kit is not supplied with an electronic unit in the first place is a con. I would make up my own kit if I had to do it again.
