    Hose clips, being lazy….

Recently had trouble getting a new (speciallist supplier supplied) hose set to seal.

bought the whole set, hoses, stainless clips and stainless pipes.

issue was with the clips not being heavy duty / sufficient quality.

The clips appeared to not stay tight & allowed coolant and pressure to seep out but not easy to spot.

now fixed using a few heavier duty stainless clips (JD type)

    so, here’s the question:-

Has anyone got a list of qty & sizes required for a complete set of hoses please?

on a standard car, I believe theres (at least) 16 clips in total:-

top and bottom hoses 6 (40mm)

heater at head end 4 (22mm)

    pump bypass / heater 2 (??)

    pump / manifold 2 (??)

    expansion 2 (??)

    missing any (??)

    many thanks in advance

question arises because there’s another set to do & this time I’d like to get all done in heavy duty, but don’t wish to get the crappy set from the speciallist supplier to measure and discard!!!

the next set is for a 1 owner since 1979, 1977 car… it has original radiator, hoses, pipes , head gaskets, heater valve and water pump. (I believe under 40k miles too) no leaks yet though!)

the clips are mostly all original wire type too!!!!

    Only after 4 numbers….
    anyone?

I believe the car is p registered, 38,000 miles still on original factory head gaskets, water pump and hoses.

I noticed the other day that one of the usual suppliers was including a set of jubilee clips with all the hoses for a complete rebuild.

      https://www.jamespaddock.co.uk/hose-clip-set-jubilee-2

I was surprised to see jubilee clips, as I thought spring clips were supposed to be better.

What is the forum wisdom on which is best?

Proper Jubilee clips are okay, many of the cheaper alternatives are flawed. I use many Mikalor clamps but they need to be carefully selected to fit properly. Triumph used wire clips because they were cheaper and would last longer than the warranty.

According to Paddocks this in their kit,
7 hoses 14 clips, excludes expansion bottle hose and additional 2 clips for that. Those with other cooling devices may have different hoses and clips

          KIT CONTAINS:

          GRH488 - RADIATOR TOP HOSE X 1

          GRH490 - HOSE PIPE TO ENGINE X 1

          GRH491 - BOTTOM HOSE X 1

          158829 - PUMP TO MANIFOLD HOSE X 1

          159019 - PUMP TO HEATER PIPE X 1

          157378 - HEATER HOSE X 1

          157379 - HEATER HOSE X 1

          HC1X - HOSE CLIP 30-40MM X 6

          HCOX - HOSE CLIP 18-25MM X 4

Those Mikalor clamps look good. Expensive mistake I guess if you do not get the right sizes. For instance for the 40mm clip do you get a 36 - 39mm or a 40 - 43mm ?

Yes, I have a box of inappropriate sizes! I don't remember the sizes I used, I'll have to check the car later this week. There are some that can't be Mikalor - there isn't space to fit them, ISTR around the water pump.

                Yes very true.

Mikalor will not fit in some locations.

The brand I last had success with was JCS high grip stainless.

Ill report back when I fathom the sizes.

LD Part lists a kit of hose clips, with part numbers. Referring to the individual part numbers reveals the sizes:
