I wanted to share some news on my mark 1 Stag - more importantly my long journey to fixing my A type overdrive. And also in sorting my new hood.
Nothing with Stags is straightforward. 😩😂
The A type OD has not been working for near on 5-6 years (nearly half the time I’ve owned the car), despite replacing the solenoid and checking that all the electrics are working. And of course the oil levels are right.
I had various well know Stag outfits quoting the need for a new OD at £600 and 10 hours labour to fit.
In comes Hardy Engineering (transmission specialists) in Leatherhead, who were excellent at identifying the problem on their test bed, which was a faulty solenoid - working sporadically, therefore saving me about £1800.
And my new hood was fitted by Jim at South East Trimmings in Faversham about 3 years ago, with lockdown getting in the way. I had problems with the handles later on, which he tried to sort by sending some spaces, to save me the 200 mile round trip.
But it still wasn’t right, so I made the trip down to see him in early June a few weeks ago. Great customer service, with him fixing up the issue with some new handles.
The moral of this story is you have to be patient with a car from 1972. And go with your own gut feel about who are trusted suppliers. I’m sure everyone has their own version of this story.
I was as happy driving home using the OD again as I was on first buying the car in 2011.
