Hood rear windows

I don't want to start an argument but why do the rear widows on all new hoods from all parties seem to have ripples, like they have not been stitched in properly, they seem to be thinner than the original rear windows, is that a correct observation? or am I wrong .

Maybe it isn't possible to install a hood without getting ripples?
I know I've failed despite lots of faffing to get a totally flat rear window.
This might be because mine is a Mk1 hood and the 1/4 windows don't allow you to get enough tension around the bent bit.

Pleased with my aldridge hood. PVC not perfectly flat but really its not very noticeable and the material is quite thick.

Nowadays, I realised the car only goes out in the dry , so hood and hardtop condition isn’t that important really.

And those opportunities are getting slim for me now… work seems to clash with dry days

Would have been nice to have got a nos hood cover though.

This is my 48 yr old window, they could make an un creased window 50yrs ago why not now, I would like a new hood but at the moment they seem expensive for not quite right? and I would be looking at it and thinking that looks wrong

A crease free window was, for a few years an aspiration of mine, but with experience and practice, and discovery of who consistently makes the best hood covers I finally managed to do it.

The technique involves getting the tension right around the corners, and sides before committing to rivets. There is a little variation in manufacture of the covers that sometimes prevents perfection but any remaining creases are only slight and far into the corners.

Having a proper frame support jig certainly makes a big difference.

The Stag's perfect lines are IMO ruined by a sloppy hood. When ordering a new hood fit, always ask about possible creases and decide if you have confidence in their answer.

I have just checked on my rear window/hood which was fitted many years ago. The name in the plastic is "Ultralite Buv and it is 1 mm thick.
I was told at the time that it was the thickness of the original plastic, and would not wrinkle, as thinner ones do.
He was right. It is always flat and clear to see through.

So are we saying that the PVC is too thin on new hoods and or that the PVC is not pulled tight enough before been sown into the unzippable rear window panel?

There is a balance between a very thin window that ripples, and one that is too thick to be flexible enough. I think the exact type of vinyl used also makes a difference.
