Having looked at my orginal diff subsequently, changed probably 5000 miles ago, the pinion nut was not tight & the spline could rock slightly. More likely to be that I think.
On the original diff, it seems the nyloc nut was useless - gave no locking action all. New 5/8 UNF Nyloc & it seems ok now, was quite stiff to do it up, as expected.
A replacement used quill shaft from Paddocks came today, has polished nicely on the seal surface & no sign of wear at all on the spline. Reassembled back into my spare extension housing (already with welded supports on it).
