Hi all, thanks for all your help, tried turning it by hand today and it wouldn’t move. I’ve had redex in the plug holes for a few days. Would it help if I removed all belts and also starter motor. I have ordered an endascope to check for rust because I had water in one of the plug holes. Cheers Steve

What were you using to try & turn it over, a breaker bar on crank pulley bolt or what ?.

Check for rust in the bores 1st. If any is found then it may well be a head off.

Water in a cylinder is normally a sign of a leaking inlet manifold gasket, almost always in one of the rear two cylinders either side. If it has been there for a long time there is likely some serious corrosion occurred which will mean a total strip down.

Went through this with a local chap.

His son , a Porsche technician advised that carburettors needed rebuilding.

I noticed carbs were leaking and fitted new needle valves.

Asked if he wanted me to start the car.

                yes .

                engine was seized.

                unseized it.

                plugs were out.

gave it a spin over … got half a cup of rusty sludge out of cylinder 6.

reported this; offered to go deeper…. Didn’t want that.

heard later he was after some else to rebuild the carbs again.

rebuilding carbs will not fix breeched head gaskets or breeched manifold gaskets… or leaky water pumps ….

                you couldn’t make it up.

if a cylinder has rusty sludge in it, the engine definitely needs more attention, most likley at least heads off…..

the last one I got to attend to (allegedly just a badly fitted water pump) needed another block and pistons. Bores severely corroded.

I hope that stone drives doesn’t need that though.

consider a compression test…. So worthwhile, so overlooked.
