Box 35 sump gasket

Evening guys.
I have detected a leak coming from the gasket ( somewhere ) and found that the gasket has been sealed with silicone sealer either side of the gasket so I think that the sealer has failed so it needs replacing. Do I refit with sealer or no sealer.

IMO silicone sealant belongs in the kitchen, or bathroom. Others disagree, but it should be used nowhere near an auto box. The cork gasket used for a BW gearbox sump seals well with LM grease on both surfaces. I have used Stag Wellseal to good effect on most gaskets, including BW sumps.

there a guys making silicon gaskets for the bw35. I can't recall details but can hunt down. they were not cheap

I replaced the sump gasket on my bw65 gearbox last year and used no sealant, it has been dry since.

Important I think is making sure the sump faces are truly flat and clean, and the retaining bolts are torqued up evenly.

A bw can be sealed up.

Dont use silicone/ bathroom sealer on sump….or any where else on a car!

consider a new banjo bolt and 2 dowty washers for dipstick (type 35 alloy sump)

The banjo bolt is weak and easily distorts … sealing face becomes non perpendicular.

consider a selector shaft lip seal.

consider input and output shaft seals.

consider rear extension gasket.

consider breather pipe and clamp to outlet.

consider breather outlet fitting sealing.

I did all this and made a type 35 leak free!

Then fitted a zf 4 spd….. which also leaks still! But operates lots better.
