    Engine rebuild costs

    Hi all,

Just forward thinking to when its time to get my engine rebuilt, I have contacted an engineering firm and they came back with this quote for the block.

So first how does this work look, have they covered everything, or is there something else they should be doing.

The price for this as £4300 ish, does that sound about right.

I may be able to bring this price down by stripping the engine myself, there is about 400 quid for acid bath the block and transport to Surface processing in Dudley, well they are about 15 mins from where I live so could sort that myself (and I know them so would likely get a discount).

but in general, does this look good

    cheers

There’s a section on the forum headed technical. Then look for maintenance and general. There’s an OEM. suggested hours for doing the sort of work you are thinking about. I suffered and broken cam follower and cam shaft. I ended up having half an engine rebuilt and £3k lighter in my bank account. My engine rebuild prior to that (6k miles and 4 years previously) cost £8.5k. Hope this helps.

This gives you a guide, I'd trust Robsport totally to rebuild an engine but why not give them a call (depending where you are of course)

      cheers

There is no mention of the Jackshaft or coreplugs. Jackshaft bearings will definitely need checking.

Also refers to balancing, engines I have had done in the past (not Stag) usually specify they want the flywheel and clutch assembly to balance properly.

Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!

Can assist with engine machining advice , and assembly work / guidance…. And we are nearby to each other too.

the quote all looks good, but missing some items…. Conrod big end bore checks / work.

As Marshman says , jackshaft checks / work.

some of the best stag engine builds being done are costing double that price….. but for complete engine, not just block and lower parts.

robin’s experience is pretty typical fwiw….. sadly.

My engine has been through the rebuild process over the last 12 months. All of the work that is listed in your quote plus installation of liners as it had cylinder damage and was already at maximum overbore. Your quote does not mention the heads. Mine needed complete overhaul and I have been warned to expect a bigger bill than the one for the block. I am expecting a bill of around $A25,000 ( $A1 = 50p). It seems that there is a worldwide shortage of old school engine builders and machinists and those still in business have more work than they can handle. Not just cars either. I had 2 wheels rebuilt for my 1970 Hodaka motorbike. Took 12 months and cost $1600.

Obviously not directly relevant, but gives some guidance as to price. My rover V8 was £6500 for a fully rebuilt replacement from one of the top rover v8 blokes. I was also quoted £20000. Included engine dyno run in. Whereas a full rebuild of my lotus twin cam cylinder head only was going to be close to £3000 alone. Luckily it just needs a partial rebuild. I think rebuild prices are quite variable. Even for the same engine so suspect shopping around and asking people (as you have on here) is a good strategy.

I just went through this and your quote seems pretty reasonable to me. I had a lot of work done on cylinder heads including issues with an incorrect cam cap that was a hangover from previous owner. All in my machine shop bill was 5k. (I stripped and rebuilt myself)

The Robsport price is from, depending on condition, block decking and con rod reconditioning might not be needed in some instances.
Prices seem similar to what I have paid locally.
As has been mentioned you need front pulley and flywheel (and clutch cover if manual box) for a full balance.
Front jack shaft bearing condition is critical if you want good oil pressure

                          Advised this wasn’t good… twice.

Trevor at Favershams advice on oil pressure after they rebuild an engine they prime the oil pump then turn over on the starter and look for 40-45psi... much higher or lower than this indicates issues.
