Auto selector gate

Hi All

Fitted a brand new unopened selector gate that Dad has had for many years which came with numbers et all built in (hens teeth I think I have heard them called).

Fitted well and over slightly to the left so the gearstick doesn't keep hammering the plastic and adding pressure to the clips underneath which is why I think they get damaged.

Not sure if its a design fault, or the way I have fitted it but from the drivers seat you can see the bulb underneath and for some reason, its not covered up. So not sure if this is a design fault with a piece of plastic missing in the making or having it over to the left exposes the bulb

Haven't go the car here so cant compare the old gate to the one fitted

Any experience appreciated

I have the same experience with the bulb being visible Andrew, it's on my list of things to look at. There seems to be a fair bit of left-to-right wriggle room between the plastic part and veneer. I'd also be interested to know what others have found, and whether it's just a question of relative adjustment or there's an underlying issue that needs fettling?

Ditto with the gate illumination builb - I put a carefully-positioned bit of black tape on it to mask it from my eyes at night. Totally original installation otherwise.

As part of my ZF conversion I had to remove the auto gate light unit to fit a PNR sensor. I replaced the lamp unit with a short strip of green LED tape.

This annoyed me as well. I fitted a short length of black foam draught excluder under the plastic gate so it covered the gap between the silver curved metal bit and the plastic. It blocked all the escaping light

Just checked as it was not something that worried me and mine is the same, it looks like a "standard extra". Now I will notice it the very few times I drive at night so I will have to do something about it. Thanks Andrew!

The stuff I used was like wetsuit material

I was at a stoneleigh? auto jumble and stumbled across a part I had never seen before.

it was a light filter that fitted under or above the selector arrow.

it was just a piece of film.

it had a triumph/ leyland 6 digit part number.

anyway my car has a three led strip to illuminate the selector now…. Also the surround position can be tweaked to block too much light bleed I found.


never saw the filter for sale before or since though.
