    Tires

    Folks,

From what I can tell, the original tire size for my 1972 US export Stag is 185/70 HR 14.
However, I have been told that this is the same tire size (185/70) used on a MG B, which weighs around 600 pounds less than the Stag.
I have also been told that the "H" rating gives a sidewall thickness of approximately 20 percent thicker than a "T" or "S" rated tire. This might explain why the 185/70 HR tire is acceptable for the weight of a Stag.

With all that in mind, what tire size offered today is recommend for a 1972 Stag?

    Thanks.
    Ron

    In the U.K. a 195 / 70 / 14 is an option.

80 aspect ratio tyres are more readily available for commercial vehicles… so they are unsuitable as they are 8 ply and too hard on the sidewall.

the most correct tyres available are Michelin mxv-p 185 / 80 / 14 But way expensive…. Think £1500 for 5 tyres in the uk.

originally Michelin xas / xvs beaded were factory fit …. Nla now…. Unless you have 15” wire wheels fitted.

original triumph stag tyre testing reports are recorded and available to see.

I believe the recommended tyre size was in favour of 175 width over others…. And maybe Avon coming out as preferred.

Sadly the Avon tyre factory in melksham uk has gone afaiaa. Absorbed into cooper possibly?

It would be really good if all stag tyre questions were automatically put into a bucket / folder on this forum!!!

      The "H", "T", "S" etc is a speed rating.

You can go original and spend a lot...

I fitted these "Firestone Multihawk 2 175/80 R14 H (88)" rolling radius is very similar and they are significantly cheaper

It's awhile since I bought any tyres, but I always used to use Blackcircles.com - buy on the internet, fit at a local garage.

195/70x14 are readily available from Blackcircles, (Nankang if you can). They're half-an-inch wider and half-an-inch larger diameter than the original 185/70 but look right. Had mine on for a year now. No complaints

Good recommendations for Blackcircles, but do they deliver to Kansas City USA, which is where the OP is based?

                      Thanks all.
Yes, I am in the USA and would prefer to buy from somewhere on this hunk of land.

I just bought the car and will not be able to pick it up for a few more weeks.
It is a manual transmission with overdrive, and still has the original engine. From what I have read online, very few manual transmission Stags were exported to the USA.

I forgot to mention that the car has chrome wire wheels. I am thinking now that there is a good chance that the wheels may be 15-inch.

I have 15" Minilite Style, fitted with 185/65x15 Firestone Roadhawks. Seems to be a much wider choice for 15".

I got my Stag and MGB tyres from Tirerack, General Altima, (seems to be Altimax now).. 195/70-14 are $108 a corner.

Great reviews, they perform well on both of my classics.

Ditto NeilR I have 15 inch Minilight style wheels with 185/65 by 15 Vrederstein and they are great. According to my my tyre fitter these have virtually identical rolling circumference to the original 14 inch tyres so no gearing issues and at £50 each fitted what's not to like
