Hi all. I was recently behind a Stag going into Hebden bridge classic weekend and as he put his brakes on the reverse lights went red too. Does anyone know any more on that modification please ? or is it somewhere in any Stag mags.
cheers, Mike
Hi this is a simple but very useful mod, but only if you are prepared to change your rear lights to LEDs.
First you need to change the bulb holder for the reverse lights to take dual filament bulbs, ie change from BAY15S to BAY15D. part number 518041.
Fit LEDs that do both white and red, like these from Classic Car LEDs
https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/products/bay15d-1157-red-and-white-stop-reverse-fog-combined-led-glb380-llb380-380
Connect your reverse light wire to the terminal on the bulb holder that is for the white light. You may need to check correct working as it's easy to connect it to the red light. Then with a piece of extension wiring from your existing brake light holder terminal to the new BAY15D terminal for the red light. Do same for the other light cluster.
You should now have a pair of two rear brake lights.
Benefits are in case of bulb failure and the LEDs give a far brighter red light. Power consumption is also less so not putting as much strain on old wiring.
I used classiccarleds and also have the fog light in the reversing light via a relay and use the hardtop hrw switch.
It's an easy to do improvement.
Grampian Stags website has a good guide.

Yes you can use these dual colour bulbs as fog lights, either instead of having dual brake lights, which you simply wire up to a fog light switch supplying power to the bulb, or if you want both dual brake lights and fog lights then you will have to use a relay to disconnect the brake light extension wiring when the fog light is activated.
Some will find the fog light mod useful, my stag though is a fine weather vehicle and having dual brake lights with some of the nutters on the road I feel is a very useful mod.
Just be aware that, as supplied, the dual function LEDs defer to red light, not white. This means that if you fit them as reverse/stop lights, as soon as you touch the brake pedal they turn red even if you are in reverse. This is no use if you are stopped and waiting to reverse as the car behind has no idea you want to go backwards such as into, or out of, a parking space. I had a few discussions with Duncan at classiccarleds about this and he eventually saw my point and agreed to look into it. Meanwhile KOY 23 gave me a simple diagram to insert a relay to ensure that reverse had priority over stop.

You are correct Dave. Relay also required in the reverse / dual brake light mode.
Relay to break the connection from the brake light when reverse selected.
Regarding the swapping of the single filament bulb holder for the dual filament one. I did this to give me Daytime Running Lights combined with the front sidelights. The holders I was sent were plastic and I kept having to bend the bulb contacts to get an adequate connection to the bulb.
