    Enough is enougth!

That's it I've had it! Having spent what seems a life time tinkering trying to thething to startI'm finally admitting defeat! All I want isto start to enjoy this car, rather just getting frustrated with it; so does anyone know anyone in the Gloucestershire/Bristol area I could call upon to get the blinking thing going for me? I'm actually based near Berkeley if this helps?

Desperate times calls for desperate action. Yours in hope

    Hi Mark,

I think you said you did not remove the distributor, but incase you did, make sure that no.2 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke, and the rotor arm is pointing to the bolt on the coil.

If youremove the no.2 spark plug andput yourfinger/thumb on the plug hole, you will feel the compression building as you turn the engine using a stilson on thecrank pulley.

I recently had mine wrong and the engine would not start at all, until I remembered, then it started first time once put back on right.

Markif I lived nearyou (even within 20-50) I would have defo popped over and helped you but sorry,...I know how you must feel.

I found this interesting though, maybe of help,......
What method did you use to find true TDC?

I used a dial gauge on top of the piston, I got mine from one of the autojumble stands at stoneleigh complete with magnetic base.

It is possible to do the job with the head attached, and I have used it on a Rover V8. It needs a simple tool making from an old spark plug

Remove the ceramic core from an old plug by cutting off the crimp with a hacksaw.

Tap a thread through the middle of the plug and then screw through a long threaded bolt sufficiently far that it will be able to touch the piston near to TDC

Carefully turn the engine by the front pulley untill the piston hits the bolt and measure the position on the timing marks. It is best if it is about 15-20 degrees BTDC, then carefully turn the engine backwards until it hits the bolt again, and again note the position by the timing marks.

If the timing marks are correct then it should read the same both ways, if it reads 20 degrees one way and 12 the other it is 4 degrees out.

The reason for not going closer to TDC is that there is very little piston movement for the last few degrees of crank rotation as TDC is approached

I know I still have my old modified plug somewhere, but since I got the dial gauge I haven't used it. Very easy way of checking if your engine isn't in bits though.

Thanks for the notes guys.....I didn't remove the distributor when changing the head gasket and I aligned the timing marks on both cams and the rota arm seems to be pointing at # 2 - I just don't get it? I have a spark and fuel (too much on occasions).

Do you think it might be worth loosening the distributor and turning either way a little to see if anything happens?

          Hi Mark
Moving the dissy won't make that much difference, it should still start.
I would remove the dissy completely , and make sure no2 cylinder is on the compression stroke, then put the dissy back in. The dissy goes in with an anti-clockwise twist where it engages with the jack shaft, so might take a couple of goes to end up in the right position.

Pity you don't live nearer, but would have thought someone on here does.

          Good luck.... Al

You're sure you've got the cams in correctly and not 180 deg out? That would definitely stop it starting.

I know someone who did this withone of the cams after a HG change :?

Malcolm - thanks for the invite. What time do you meet? I'll try to get along this week. If it takes a cuppa and a few biscuits to get the stag runningI'd be delighted to welcome to my place which, as it happens is also Hinton, it just not the one with the Bull - Hinton near Berkeley.

Would welcome the chance to talk through what I've done so far to check if I'm any where near right.......

I wondered about this Nick. I only removed one cam and when fitting it back I made sure that the othercam wasaligned i.e. the timing marks on the cam and the cam bearingshell were in line. So I haveboth cams showing the timing marks at the same time.I assume this is correct?

Sounds right; I'm trying to remember how I got mine back in wrong. It was obvious when I checked after wondering why it wouldn't start.
