is it daft to want a 2500 PI as well as a Stag?

Ive owned two classic cars before and realistically i didnt have enough time to spend on both of them and i wont be retired for another 10 years at least. But i am seriously thinking about a 2500 PI with all the trimmings, leather interior etc. Prices not horrendous. Is this just being greedy. Can always try and get round the missus by saying project for my 16 year old….

Is the 2500 a nice car to own and drive?

The 2.5PI is fabulous - I've had three over the years and it makes for a fast, comfortable everyday car. However, find someone who really knows the Lucas PI system inside out to do the maintenance - if the PI is working properly it really is the business, but if there's a fault, it's horrible.

I had one about 20 years ago, it was my daily driver for 8 years and I did about 75,000 miles in it.

It was the most reliable Triumph I have ever owned, though I did fully rebuild it shortly after buying it. I only bought it for the injection system for my USA spec TR6, but it had 6 months MOT on it and only needed a pair of track rod ends to get a new MOT.

I ended up doing the sills and a few patches in the arches, then a full respray and built a fresh PI engine for it.

The most important thing is to regularly check the synchronisation of the 3 throttle bodies, if they don't open at exactly the same time the mixture will be different on every pair of cylinders. I used to check mine every 3000 miles, it is a 10 minute job to adjust them.

A 2.5 PI and a Stag would be to me a perfect combination, I've never owned one but always hankered after one.
Years back I had a new B L supplied 2.5S manual OD estate which I drove to France and back and that was a brilliant car, fast, comfortable and that engine every bit as good as the V8 but so smooth being a 6.
If you can find a good PI and as Neil says, look after the key parts properly, go for it - you won't regret i!

I've had two of them as my daily driver and owned one alongside my current Stag for many years. As has been said if they are set up properly they are utterly fabulous. I found them fast, so very comfortable, exceptionally reliable and very economical on fuel.
Drive a Stag every day... it's wonderful!

I had a 2500TC a few years back. Great car. My family loved it.

Wanting a classic car is daft.
Once you have overcome that a second doesn't make you more daft! Merely confirmation.

One of the nicest PI's I've ever seen on line.
                  Not sure who owns it.
Who would not want to own this?
                  Puts my 2500S to shame.

If the very stylish above Triumph 2500 PI above doesn't grab you, the below 2500S may be something you may want to aspire to.
2500S has a front anti roll bar you know, although I think this owner did not like the factory issue Stag wheels:

When my Pa was MD of a drinks company belonging to Bass Charrington, I was asked to fetch some papers in the west London office and take them back to the Bellhouse hotel near Beaconsfield. The marketing director made his company automatic Triumph 2.5 P available. And as a student, I tested it to see what it could do. I was mightily impressed how quick it was and how comfortable. If I didn’t have the Alvis a well sorted 2.5 PI Estate would be my choice for a stablemate for my Stag.

Yes, the big saloons are such an underrated car.
The Mk1 did have a bit of an awkward front and a wacky dashboard but became very desirable in PI form.
The much prettier Mk2 borrowed its update from the Stag's design.

All came with manual winding windows, that beautiful brown PI above has had electric windows retrofitted; a very tidy job.

By comparison to the Stag, the 2000/2500 was a very successful car for Triumph.
Production ran for 14 years (twice that of the Stag) with over 324,000 units built.

There's good evidence that Canley were gearing up to produce a Mk3 saloon/sedan in the mid 70's powered by the 2.6 straight six that ultimately ended up in the Rover SD1.
Also good evidence that there was a Stag V8 powered Mk2 estate built at the factory. Hardly a surprise as the TV8 was not intended just for the Stag.

Not daft at all ... in 50 years of motoring the 2500TC and 2500S in which I covered many miles were the best cars I ever had - supremely comfortable and reliable.

The late Del Lines built many estates and saloons with the TV8 at his business in Weston-Super-Mare (Atlantic Garage) until BL stopped him. Some still survive, including a red estate that has been reunited with its original DEL33 registration. There is a yellow one in Holland.

Have to second that. However, if the OP wants leather then I think that was only available on the options list for the Mk.1. Think Triumph dropped the option for the Mk.2 but others will be more knowledge than me on trim subjects.
