But it caused such a lot of trouble. My rebuilt 'J'-type overdrive had travelled 4,000 trouble-free miles when it just stopped working on the return journey from Sheffield. 150 miles without overdrive at motorway speeds isn't nice! After quite a bit of checking and testing and removing the sump to check the non-return valve, I finally removed the solenoid to check it. I found that the little circlip that holds the plunger in had fallen out so the solenoid, although it made the correct clicking sound and had the correct electrical current through it, couldn't do its job. Fortunately I was able to recover the circlip with a magnet on a stick and screw in a replacement solenoid. The road test proved everything is back to normal.
A note to self: in the Technical Section there is a document about the J-type overdrive and in that document is a trouble-shooting chart. That chart recommends that the electrical supply to the solenoid is checked, if that's okay then take the solenoid out and check that it is actually working. Much easier that removing the sump and taking the valves out......
