    Clutch master cylinder overhaul

    Hi all,

Does anyone know where one can get replacement internal springs for late model clutch master cylinders?

The renovation rubbers are easy enough but the spring seems a harder one... given the number of refurbed cylinders about I would hope somewhere might do the spring on its own.

As always any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thanks Jeff, given that traders seem to sell renovated cylinders I wonder if it is no longer available. But getting a whole new one does not seem to be an issue… just pricey considering all mine needs is a spring! Many thanks for the suggestion though!

According to the Parts Catalogue, a new clutch master cylinder was only sold as a complete assembly so the spring was never available. Seals were / are available however.
Buying a second hand cylinder to obtain one seems the only option.
        Mike.

Hi Mike, seems like that might be the route I need take. Little frustrating given the waste of an otherwise good cylinder (either the donor part or the original). Thanks for the reply.

if the cylinder is good, what went wrong with the original spring?

              Hi Richard and friend,

It appears as if the spring metal got brittle over the years (probably through straight forward wear and tear) and broke up - even though the car has only done 55k since new, it's the original 51 year old master cylinder which I overhauled about 12 years ago. The spring didn't appear compromised then (as much as you can tell by eyeballing).

Everything else inside is in good condition and there is no apparent scratching of the barrel due to the spring giving way - at least nothing by naked eyesight, nor by the keyhole camera I popped in to look at it - so seems that a simple spring replacement will fix the part.

Figured, as there are traders selling refurbed cylinders, there could be a supply of these springs somewhere rather than salvaging.

Thanks Dave, I have approached Tony and will hopefully be going across to him next week as I have a few other parts to look for.
