    Repair to pedestal stud thread in inlet manifold

    It seems to be a common problem that the thread in the inlet manifold which accepts the pedestal stud (TD978) is prone to being stripped. I had a problem with an otherwise good casting in which a previous repair was made by fitting an oversize 7/16 stud, but this caused two problems - first, there was interference between the larger nut at the top of the stud and the valve (UKC8848), and second, the hole through the pedestal (217594) had to be bored out , and this which made it more difficult to get an airtight seal under the fibre washer (WF509)without using a load of messy gloop.

    I was able to retrieve the situation using an E-Z Lok insert (3/8-16 UNC) in the inlet manifold and an unmolested stud and pedestal, it turned out this wasn't too difficult with basic tools.

      Thanks Rigid - the hardest part was finding an insert that would work. Owing to the previous repair, a Heli Coli or similar insert wasn't viable as the hole had already been enlarged too much, but there was enough material in the casting to allow the hole to be further enlarged for the E-Z Lok.

        My guess is that everyone will one day be part of the "been there done that" crowd, since the aluminum casting just wears down over time. I had a Time-sert 3/8-16 SAE kit # 0381 'laying around', so used that brand. You can do in situ, just make sure to stuff some rags into the manifold and keep your favorite vacuum running to get all the swarf.

        The nice thing with time-Sert's are you can get them in various lengths and if need be the Big-Sert's for oversize repairs. The bad thing about Time-sert's are their prices.
