I am a new Stag owner and I am trying to find the cause of the small of petrol mostly in the boot area but also generally around the car. I have removed the tank and there are several pitted and rusty areas on the underside and a lot of rust round the fuel sender on the top. I have cleaned these areas up but its not clear if the tank is leaking. I may try to pressure test it in the next few days. My question is does anyone know where the steel replacement tanks available from several well known Stag parts suppliers are manufactured? I always try to buy British to support our manufacturers but it is not always possible. If they are made abroad I will consider an aluminium tank which are made in the UK. In fact some are competitively priced and made by reputable engineering companies with plenty of history. Thank you.

I’ve got a leak free one you can have for £150 if you need one. It needs a clean out of bits inside (I was going to throw some 20mm gravel in and shake it all about to break the bits up which I can do if you want it)Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Compbrake are on eBay - item no 296783913581
£670 of your hard earned - about £150 more than a steel tank from Rimmers/Paddocks. Not sure why anyone would need an ally tank tbh, surely if the steel tank ahs alsted 50 years or so, a new one would do the same? Or is there more water in the ethanol-dosed fuel these days to rust out steel tanks?Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I just had a quick look on the Compbrake website. The aluminium tank is £499 plus vat which brings it up to £600. If you wanted it powder coated it appears to be £529.99 plus vat which makes it £636. But in the description it says it also includes a fuel sender which narrows the gap to a steel tank. As I stated previously I would like to know where the steel tanks are manufactured as I want to buy UK manufactured items where possible. I will ask the suppliers. Also we dont know if the available tanks are better or worse than the originals so no guarantee they will last 50 years. But that would not bother me so much as I am in my seventies now!

Agreed, steel will see out the life of most owners but the last SOC mag featuring Mytle restoration mentions his Rimmers steel Stag tank had fixing holes 1 cm out (would have to re-read that but have not been able to contact the series author at present). Otherwise a steel one will have to suffice for me.

Seal your fuel tank from the harmful effects of Ethanol or the rust that's present and causing filters to block. Rustbuster Slosh will provide a Polyurethane seal, sealing pinholes and surface corrosion.
Still would disable the fuel pump and run the car until dry for the carb float chambers sake for months worth of storageStags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony
