        I have always had a slight petrol smell in the boot if left closed. I changed the tank a while back after getting a bad leak which flooded over the garage floor but fitting that and checking all the joints and connections made no difference to the smell. After the leak I fitted a battery isolator to be on the safe side and now leave the boot lid slightly open and that stops it smelling. I suspect the vent pipe under the boot area may be the culprit.

          S.A.T. Something you could check without removing the tank. The breather pipe from the filter near the fuel pump passes under the tank and exits the car through a hole near the bottom of the vertical panel at the back of the boot.. This hole should have a rubber grommet with a hole in it, that is an airtight fit on the pipe and the panel. If the grommet has perished, as mine had, it allows the normal petrol fumes from the breather to blow back in to the boot when the car is being driven.
          You should be able to see if it is still there from under the car.

              When I removed my tank I found it was in reasonable condition inside and out. The base had some slight surface rust and the top round the sender was also surface rusted. The interior was very clean and I am guessing it is not the original tank. I rubbed down the rusted areas pressure tested the tank and then primed and painted it. I found the vent pipe was completely rigid and was just dangled inside the inner and outer wing. The filler cap overflow pipe was also rigid and had fallen off it spigot slightly. So put new vent pipes and filter and overflow pipes in and ran them under the tank through new grommets through to beneath the car. The floor area in the boot is remarkably clean and rust free. I fitted new connecting pipes in the boot with new clips as the old ones showed signs of weeping. All back and working well and no more petrol smell in the boot. Was probably a combination of the vent pipe, and the small connecting hoses perished and old clips.
