    Thermostat Blocked????

    Hello,

I refurbished for sure my 6 triumph stag motor and have a strange problem, after changing and demounting the whole motor, crankshaft, block cleaning new gaskets......and I let the motor turn, the
EVANS coolant came in the V and in through the STUDS (See picture), I suspect now that my NEW Thermostath is blocked, when the motors turns the leakages dry away, after putting the motor off,
the day after I se all the leakages through the studs and in the V under the manifold, so I suspect that the pressure can't go away and searched its way through the weakest points.

Am I right;;see pictures ,the motor has completely been refurbished and renewed and this is motor 7 and I never had such a problem!!!!

Thanks in advance for your reactions!!!

    Greetings,

    Luc

I had a simlar problem which was caused by faulty new head gaskets - they allowed the coolant to leak out between the head and the block even when the head studs were fully torqued.

Have you checked and double checked all the hoses? Under the air filter there might be something leaking.

Also, is your thermostat gasket sealing properly? It might be leaking from there. If so take it off and rub down the surfaces with abrasive paper then use hylomar to get a better seal.

You can test the thermostat in a pan of boiling water.

I would take off the air filter and then run the engine and look and listen (for any hissing) when it is hot.

not a huge fan would be an understatement but did you correctly purge the system before adding.

then, and correct me if wrong, didn't think it needed a thermostat and as it runs at no pressure the leak maybe caused by combustion gases or a biblical failure of the head gasket.

there are some horrible head gaskets available where the amount of gasket material between the rear most fire ring and the coolant passage it too small.

I had faulty head gaskets where the fire ring would not compress enough and the gaskets leaked along the length of the block on the outside.

This could be a similar problem.
If the inlet manifold is too wide to sit properly between the heads due to head skimming, and the engine is assembled as per the ROM where the last head isn't tightened down until the inlet manifold is fitted, it could be that the manifold is forcing the heads apart allowing coolant to come up the head stud holes.

BGA gaskets. Available from many of the usual Stag suppliers in standard thickness and extra thick.

BGA gaskets - I returned the Payen ones to Rimmers and fitted BGA type from Robsport. 6,000 miles later, no trouble.

I have fitted cometic head gaskets not cheap at all.
lesley and rogers' stag engine was rebuilt by Clive who insisted on cometic head gaskets.
                    I purchased mine from Enginuity.

I never used Cometic gaskets on my stag.

considered using them on a members car last year.

enginuity said they still had enough to let me have a pair but were very low on stock.

Did not need to go ahead with them in the end.

in my day job we use cometic quite a bit…. They are cheaper than oem prototypes, but not cheap.

perhaps we need to get more cometic gaskets for stags?

I've got a pair of Payen gaskets bought from F W Thornton years ago - looking at posts above, is the current advice to use BGA or Cometic instead?

As far as I know there has been nothing but good reports of the BGA ones.
