9 - 12 ft lbs not a lot at all. Nice clean gasket, check both faces (gearbox and sump) are clean, flat and burr free. Don't use any sealant (you risk some falling inside the box and "gumming up the works". Tighten up evenly - like cylinder head bolts. Do all that and it will still dump oil everywhere
Thanks Marshman. This is the 4th attempt in the 5 years I've had this issue I've tried tightening the bolts but it just squeezes the gasket out, I am now trying a 3mm thick rubber gasket I found on eBay and hope this might improve it.

It really shouldn't be squeezing the standard cork gasket out, it certainly didn't on mine and I think I nipped them up a little bit tighter in a vain and misguided attempt to stop the oil exiting. As I said 9 - 12 ft lbs is not a lot at all, are you sure your torque wrench is correct?

Mine didn't leak in "normal" regular use, it was when it was left abandoned for a few weeks it used to leak as the fluid in torque converter gradually crept back to the main box raising the level way above "normal" - not sure any leak was from the sump gasket in particular, the fluid was all over so difficult to tell. Solution ? drive the car regularly

I found that if the fluid level rose too high in the sump, it started to back up in to the rubber breather pipe. This is only a push fit on to the plastic spigot on the box so it needs to be a good fit.
The rubber pipe hardens with age at the gearbox end causing it to leak. The pipe is probably still flexible further up, so cutting off the hard bit, and refitting the pipe may be all that is needed. Alternatively you could remove the pipe and re fit it the other way round, or even replace it.
Mike.
The last gasket was replaced in May last year and was fine it was never tightened with a torque wrench but manually done by feel. It was in December I started her to give her a warm up as it had been weeks since I'd been out in her. After another few weeks I looked underneath when I was horrified by the amount of oil there. I wiped down and left it. Checked a few days later and more oil and wet in the same region.
3/4 of the sump was fine and no oil coming from above the box, but looking down the right hand side the last three bolt were a little loose at the back and was really wet and dripping on to floor. I tried to nip them and found they were a bit loose. After another startup and check days later more oil. Sump is now off and checked it was level all round, all is good, so new gasket is being fitted this week and hope for the best. Thanks for info and suggestions I'll let you know how it goes.
Mike
