Piston installed height

Hello all, my first post on the site hopefully in the right place. Although I have been involved in Triumph repairs off and on since 1970 , this is my first Stag engine overhaul. I have looked thru several shop manuals and on line but not found a definitive answer as to the installed piston height for a 1972 Stag.
Any help much appreciated

You may want to specify Which pistons you have.. is it a federal 72 or non federal? Are they original pistons or replacement County ones?


They all could be different and in the end you probably just need to measure what you have and do the calculations.

The outer crown surface should be under flush to the fire face of the block if that helps…. More info later….

I have found factory standard high compression pistons come about 10 thou out of the block. Overbores have a lower installed height, 20 thou over being about flush and 40 thou over below deck height. This keeps the compression ratio standard with the extra cylinder capacity gained with the overbore.

I have never measured the low compression pistons.

If the block has been skimmed it will obviously set the piston further out of the block. This isn't much of a problem in my experience, I have skimmed blocks to raise the compression with up to 25 thou protrusion using standard head gaskets, though it is always worth checking valve to piston clearance
