    my first stag......maybe

hi. I went to look at a stag the other day without really knowing much about them apart from the past problems everyone seems keen on telling you about. The engine was the original well triumph v8 anyway, it had loads of service history the guy said he changed the oil every 3k miles and flushed the rad once a year he seemed to know his stuff (wouldn't be hard because i know nothing only what ive read). I looked at the oil cap thing trying to look like i knew what i was doing and it was nice and black and the dipstick oil (not me) was goldenish brown. Right the point is after we went for a drive maybe 20 mins when opening the bonnet again the header tank was letting water by under pressure kinda looked greenish, i said whats that and was told he proberly filled it to high and when it gets hot it overflows. Now the fella seems really honest showing me all the little rust spots and so on but reading more about the stag is this overflowing header tank a sign of a knackerd head gasket, i'm going back next week to pick it up so is there any easy way of seeing if it really is the head gasket.

    many thanks

The guys on here will know straight away what the overflow issue is I'm sure they will bombard you with infor.

But I noticed that you said the guy was good enough to show you all the little rust spots. The guy I bought mine from last spring was just the same smashing guy dead honest and showed me some little rust spots that would only take a couple of hundred quid to sort. I was also very green as far as the Stag was concerned.

Well what a load off bollocks, don't listen to him believe me those little rust spots that he has so honestly pointed out will cost you an arm and leg unless you happen to have a spray booth in your garageand the skill to use it.

Buy a car if possible from some of the guys in this club, there are normally some for sale, and the guys seem pretty straight, do not fall into the trap that I did and let your heart rule your head, it will cost you loads in cash and grief. The car I bought has now cost me 8 grand to sort those little rust spots and the easy little things like an overfilled cooling systemthat you should.nt worry aboutBEWARE.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to scare you off, but be sure, and if not walk away and look at others. Ask some of the SOC members that may be local to you to cast an eye over what ever you may be considering

It has taken me loads of time money and effort to get my Stag to where I nowlike it, but I could have saved myself loads of heartache along the way

    take care

    Mike

      Hi there,
Mike's quite right with the need to be very cautious. If you're not, as Mike says, you are very likely to be in for a boat load of grief.
My golden rules were, to join the SOC Club, get to know the guys at the noggin meetings, and take someone with you to look at several cars.
I would not buy off E Bay, without someone going with you who knows what they are looking at.
I bought mine from the adverts at the back of the Stag mag. I travelled 175 miles to see it, and went the following weekend with the local SOC coordinator and a trailer to fetch it the weekend after, once he had given it the thumbs up.
Don't be put off by us lot, but make sure you don't let your heart rule your wallet!!
Good luck, and be patient enough to find a good 'un
      Peter

        Hi,

It could have just been overfilled but if he is a knowledgeable owner why would he have done it??

You need to see the car when it is cold - left over night - then check that the expansion bottle is no more than 1/3rd full. Check that the radiator is full - ask the owner to remove the filler bung on the top left hand corner of the radiator - it should be full almost to the top. Then replace the bung, make sure the pressure cap is on the expansion bottle securely and then go for a drive. i reckon you need to go for 15 to 20 miles of brisk to hard driving to get the engine really hot. whilst on the run check the heater blows hot air when on hot and cold air when its cold 9this checks the heater valve is OK - if its not its a sign of neglect and any half decent owner would have sorted it out). When you get back let it idle for a few mins and watch the temp gauge - it should have never gone above half way whilst you were out. if it doesn't have a electric fan then it may creep up when you get back.

Switch the engine off and lift the bonnet. Look at the level in the expansion bottle it should not really be above 3/4 full if it was less then a 1/3rd full to start with. now the crucial thing - you have to let the car cool down for several hours and the level in the expansion bottle should go back down - eventually to its original level. There shouldn't be any funny hissing or whistles.

If it doesn't do this then either:

        1. Walk away

        2. Tell him you will come back when its fixed

        3. Get 2k knocked of the price to cover contingencies like 2 new heads! Unless you feel brave enough to do it yourself then 1k ought to cover it.

        Good luck

P.s. I agree with moraystag re: rust spots - they are all bad news and you cannot tell how bad they are just by looking. If there are lots in all the usual places it doesn't bode well.

              Welcome on board fella,

Sorry to say i am not near youand in all fairness not technically minded enough to assist anyway, however i have just had my stag diagnosed with hgf. coolant expeling out of the expansion bottle when hot and then not returning to the engine once cold can be a tell tale sign of hgf . In short if you are in doubt walk away you will find a good one eventually.

              Good Luck

              Mike

I thought you already bought your Stag, and were asking questions about It the other day.

Is this a second one you are looking at?

                Confused......Al:?:?

I guess the question to ask the seller is why did the water have to be topped up in the first place. OK, if your test drive was the first outing after some work that involved a refill, but in theory all subsequent runs should not push any more coolant out as long as there are no leaks.

                    John.

I'm with you on this one, I am sure overhaul said he was having the engine rebuilt on the blue stag he had just purchased:?

So the question is if this is the second Stag then why?

                        i am too????

                        Good Evening

Hope it's ok to post a new topic?

I purchased last week, my lifetime dream - a Triumph Stag. It's got a reconditioned Triumph Stag engine, is auto and so far has lived up to all my expectations, particularly with regards to the driving experience.

I realise that the road ahead may not always be smooth and the RAC may have to help me out on occasions, but already my stag has attracted so many comments, I've almost had to beat people off with a stick!

I cannot begin to tell you how much I have always wanted one of these beasties!

Looking forward to learning lots (particularly when the car is misbehaving!).

                        Sharon
