    power steering pump

Hi everyone,i have a small leak on the power steering pump,i replaced the high & low pressure pipes at the back end of last year-could it be that i've not bled the system successfully after the work i did ? or will it be a case of pulling apart the pump and replace all the seals? if so anyone done it-is it straight forward or a specialist job-i'm not avery confident mechanic!thanks in advance!Dale

I have seen many Stags which have a small leak inc' mine. The signs are a small amount of fluid on the inner wing, occasionally -----I have no idea where it is leaking from though.

      Hi Dale

I had a small leak on mine after I had replaced the hoses. It turned out that the high pressure hose was not seated and tightened properly. The leak was coming from around the nut - I cleaned everything off and this was the only oily part. I slackened the nut, moved the pipe back andforth a littleand retightened. Its been fine since (hope it doesn't start leaking tomorrow!!).

      Hope this helps.

If its not the pipes or connections to the pump then it is most probably the main seal on the pump casing, either try STP stop leaks for PS, or purchase a seal kit easy fix, not to much trouble to do.

i'll try that too if its not the connections-just didn't know how tricky it might be to replace the seals! thanks Steve

The biggest problem I had was removing the pulley, the kit has all you need, and mine has not leaked from the pump since I fitted the new seals

Hiya Dale, I'm betting you have nothing to worry about, either the high pressure pipe is not quite sealed as Brian suggests, or the tank is overfilled, if it's finding it's way onto the inner wing, it's blowing out round the cap, it's not sealed, it's only a dust cover. Ref bleeding, jack both front wheels off the ground and wind from lock to lock slowly a couple of times till no bubbles show in the tank, and note the level difference on the dipstick between hot and cold - seemples. Martin.

Ive got a leak on the nearside of the steering rack,it looks like it has a round ring with a thread in it and 3 grooves cut out of the outside, which must need a special tool to tighten it up. The leak is above the bolt BH607201 in the picture. Is there a tool available to tighten this up?

Hiya, that'll be fluid leaking out from the inner end of the bellows, there shouldn't be any fluid in it, so you have a failing seal, most of the proprietry power steering leak stop addatives work a treat, so half empty the PAS tank and top up with it, it may take a couple of days to work, and you may need to add more, but there's a very good chance it will stop, that will keep you going for quite some time and you can change the rack in your own time, for £6 or £7 it's worth trying. Cheers, Martin.

I will get some STP additive today.

Hi ,just got to this stage! i've been trying unsuccessfully to get the nut on the pulley off,but how? i have tried putting the pulley wheelinto my vice (vertically)but not alot to grip onto whilst i undo the nut,the pulley wheel keeps slipping out of the vice.perhaps i need a bigger vice so i can put it in horizontally; or is there a particalar way of doing this? also when the nut is off is it easy then to get the pulley wheel off? Dale

Hiya, use a V belt, tight round the pulley and gripped in the vice, or,stand on the V belt and use an electric impact wrench, the one used for wheel removal should do it. Martin.
