Front Damper Installation

I am in the process of refurbishing the front dampers on my MK2. I have just finished, cleaning and painting all the relavants bit and have moved to removing the shiny parts from Rimmers packaging for the rebuild. First job was to fit the new (standard) dampers into the tube and tighten down the threaded collar. Unfortunately at full tight the collar does not clamp the damper in place I am left with a few millimetres of movement. Any advice ? Am I missing a seal or something to close up the gap?

A spacer is sometimes required to make the insert fit correctly, depending on the length of the replacement. I suggest your specialist supplier might have seen fit to include a pair of them as well, if they were necessary with their inserts.

This has been mentioned on here previously. I gather it was resolved by dropping a washer or two into the tube as spacers before installing the insert.

I have had a further look. The new collar has a rebate to centralise the damper. It is the rebate that is preventing the damper from being fully clamped!

Possibly Steve, but a suitable thickness of packing-washers etc.- in the bottom of each tube will ensure that everything fits correctly.
