    Joy oh Joy

Got my Stag last year and is basically a very sound car, however noticed water
in Vee, not much, so just kept an eye on the water level.
Over the winter I investigate the problem and decided it must be the
inlet manifold gaskets so replaced them and also put well seal on them for extra security.
I also removed the water pump and decided in my wisdom it was fine, anyway
I refitted everything and ran the car till hot, fine no leak ,went for a run came back
had a look under bonnet. S**t water in vee. Off with inlet manifolds again, in the process destroying gaskets,so order more. Decide it must be waterpump send off for refurb.
Pump arrives back with all new gaskets.
Refit once again and when torquing up bolts managed to strip couple of threads.
So off comes the manifold again, guess what, new gaskets required,as managed to tear them again.
Order two sets this time. Decide to Tap and Helicoil all the threads to be on safe side.
First time I have tapped anything, all going well till I drilled one of the holes and realise it already has been Helicoiled. Spend next two days getting the mashed Helicoil out.,
Seriously thinking of taking a three pound hammer to the car now.
Leave the car for a couple of days to cool down, me, not the car. Finally get everything back together
I even managed to get the Dissy back in the right place, Start car and go for run, success no water leaks. But no happy ending have noticed in the last few days, no not water, but a a nice hazy blue smoke screen when I accelerate, so looks like an engine rebuild some time this winter, will order three sets of Gaskets now.
Sorry for rant enjoying car but slightly p**sed off.

    Hi Max,
Very sad, but not that uncommon a story, unfortunately. Hope we have a red hot summer so you can enjoy it and fall back in love with it, before your winter endeavours.
Might be worth further investigations as to reasons for the blue haze, in case a full rebuild can be avoided. Compression test etc might save you some cash.
    good luck!
    Peter

      hi,

i put a thread on here too, just to rant. i had the same leak in the vee. it was my thermohousing, last owner stripped it and siliconed it back together.

all fixed now though, and guess what, i have a blue haze that follows me too!!! now.

it must be something to do with Stags, this blue haze, i took the car to E J Ward [triumph specialist] he said to keep topping the oil up and book her in the winter, said look on the bright side ' she will always run on fresh oil' he did say it was the rings and that the oilwould clog the plugs up, so they are out for a clean when she plays up a bit, then drives like a dream with a new spark, you may get the same, so bear it in mind when she wont start and is very lumpy or fires on 6 or 7 cylinders and has no pull.

hope it works well for you in the future at least we have a good bunch of lads to help us out when we are stuck, and to rant at

Hiya Max, VERY sorry to read of your woes, but you still own one of the most desireable classic cars around, if you don't believe me, get the current issue of "Classic Cars". and to repeat Peter's wishes, fingers crossed for a hot summer. SWMBO and I argue occasionally, but I still love her - faults and all. Martin.

You'll be telling us next when your driving your not listening to every little noise, watching the temp gauge, oil pressure if you have one,.

Know how you feel Max, decided to strip the underseal off the back end of mine, had a few problems but got to the stage of putting the stone chip on. For some reason the stone chip wouldnt spray so assumed it was too thick so thinned it down with thinners, turns out the the can was shorter than the usual schutz cans and the pick up pipe was touching the bottom of the can, anyway shortened the pipe and started to spray, unfortunately some neat thinners came out of the gun and softened the primer which then reacted with the stone chip, horrible mess. Had borrowed my brothers still saw to do some brick work and was so tempted to cutthe f**king car into pieces, now stuck as I need the car back on the road for the 14th but know Im going to have to strip the paint off and start again, bloody cars.

Thanks for all the words of comfort, gave the old girl a wash and polish
this evening and decided to try and not think about it burning oil and
just enjoy her for the summer, as AlanD said she will be getting plenty of
fresh oil alot of the time. Will have a compression test sometime and see
what comes up. Martin will look out for Classic Car to read the write up.

                        Cheers Max
