Carb rebuild

IMG_9175.jpg Big shout out to Burlen Fuel Systems, who must be keeping every classic car owner going. They stock all, original spec, parts for SU, Amal and our Strombergs and are very free with their knowledge on the phone.
I was prompted to act by flooding of the RH carb and stuck vent and starter valves so bought kits from Burlen. Both carbs, vapour blasted all seals and gaskets replaced, spindle bearings replaced. The main flooding was caused by the a small plastic washer that keeps the needle in place. The stuck Temp compensators were cleaned and reset but the hardest part was extracting the brass plug to remove the vent valves which had refused to return despite lengthy time and effort with carb cleaner and moving back and forth.
When (if) it stops raining they can go back on the car and final setup.

Over the phone they confirmed all 'O' rings, diaphragms and seals were now fully ethanol compliant.

Burlen are indeed the King amongst companies who profess to rebuild carbs.

So often the carb sets are refurbished without any attention to baseline settings. this jets are too low, float needle valves are wrong etc etc etc

The brass plug that retains the float chamber vent, tap it to what ever tap / bolt you have. screw a bolt in and use a slide hammer to extract the plug. They rarely need much more than a gentle tap with a rubber mallet once everything is aligned straight.

And with a decent baseline setting you can tune them yourself with only the most basic tools and a workshop manual.

In my most humble opinion it is getting the baseline than causes more issues than not.
